Activity

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Design a Book Cover”

In this project, students design and present a book cover that evokes the mood, symbolism, and themes of Rebecca.

In this project, you will design and present a book cover for Rebecca. Your book cover must represent the mood, include at least one symbol, and connect to one of the text’s main themes. Your final project must include the following elements:

  • The Plan: Include one or more pages of notes that show your intentional planning for including the mood, symbolism, and at least one of the novel’s themes such as Rebecca’s Haunting, The Narrator’s Journey from Innocence to Wisdom, or The Paradise of Manderley.
  • The First Draft: Include a sketch of your book cover that demonstrates your ideas and planning.
  • The Final Draft: Present your final draft. Be ready to explain how the book cover evokes the mood, symbol(s), and theme(s) of Rebecca.

Teaching Suggestion: The intent of this project is for students to synthesize their understanding of the novel and create a memorable and creative artistic representation. If technology is available, you might consider offering students the option to complete the project with a graphic design program.
